Portrait Photograghy Tips

April 23, 2014  •  Leave a Comment

Its great when I hear from people who have a passion for photography and want to improve there skills. The other day, somebody emailed me this question.

"hi I have been looking on your site and loving what I am seeing. I am a beginner self-thought photographer who is looking to widen my skills. I was wondering if you could answer something for me, it would be a great help. How did you go about getting people for your portrait work, did you know them before hand or just ask strangers and how would i go about setting up the shoot.? thank you for your time reading this."

Up to now, I have worked with some great models from the UK and abroad and from my experience, Fashion photography is a very unique style of photography because you pose people very differently compared to a family or wedding photography.

This is the response I gave to that question.

"Hi,

What I would do, I would ask your friends and family first before asking strangers until you become comfortable with taking pictures of people and directing people into poses. Once you have done that, it will become easier to get strangers to pose for you because your friends and family will automatically recommend you after a lot of practise.

For setting up a shoot, if its a family portrait, just take them to a park or some other relaxed environment and you can do some fun pictures like this.

If its a fashion shoot, you just need a good idea on the style you want to photograph. It could be Vintage, High Fashion, Street etc....
Fashion Photography is a big subject and there are loads of places on the internet to answer specific questions you may have. Even Youtube has good tutorial on fashion photography and doing portrait work.

Hope this helps.

Gary"

It takes a long time to be good at fashion photography and I am still learning things everyday, but with enough practise and dedication, it can be a fun style of photography to get into.
