Could anyone be a wedding photographer?
After being asked some questions about wedding photography, I thought to myself, could anyone be a wedding photographer if you know how to take decent photos?
As some of you may know, I am a computer geek (yes I have said in the past "just reboot your pc" because that usually fixes about 95% of all computer problems). I have been working in the computer industry for over 10 years but about 4-5 years ago, I bought myself my first DSLR camera. I was photographing everything and anything to a point that doctors nearly had to surgically remove the camera from my hand because people thought it had become part of my body.
Flash forward 2 (may be 3) years, I have a decent camera and couple of decent lens and I have seen photos from other wedding photographers weddings and thought "I could do that, that looks so easy!", How wrong was I!
The only thing I can say from the weddings I have done up to now is that you need proper wedding equipment because the £400 SLR camera from Argos and a couple of lens may not be enough (even if one of the lens is a 50mm 1.4).
You also you have to be a Jedi Master with the camera and learn how to use it fully in every light changing conditions to capture that special photo. Also you need X-Men abilities with the special powers to predict future events of the wedding day before it actually happens. In between taking photos, you have to be a entertainer and try to get children to smile for you for the camera. At some weddings, I have pulled so many funny faces, I might take up Gurning one day.
So while not predicting world events, Jedi Mastering and gurning, you also have to have miniature personal assistant implanted in your brain to remind you when things will happen on the day, what photos need to be taken and to keep track of where everybody is.
Have I told you need a lot of patience. You have to have the same amount of patience that a crane would have when it stands on one leg waiting for a fish to swim by.
Did I also mention that you may also have to use your Picasso and Leonardo da Vinci skills and think of creative ways to capture and edit photos.
So if you don't mind all of that, do it, you get to meet some amazing people at every wedding and they are a lot of fun.
