Photographing animals at a zoo

During the course of our lifetime, each and every one of us will visit the zoo at some point in our lives. It may be with friends or with your family and you will always take a camera with you to get those snaps of elephants playing with bark, giraffes walking around and lions roaring.

Taking photos at a zoo can be very challenging at times because you enter continuous changing lighting conditions from being indoors in a dark environment, to going outside in a sunny environment.

One tip to taking photos indoors of an animal behind a glass it to stand straight at the glass and don’t use flash if possible and increase your ISO level (try and not go higher than 800). Also if you press the camera against the glass, it will also help with the image quality (make sure you get a cloth and wipe the smudge marks from the area of the glass before taking a photo). The above and below photos where both taken through a glass window.

Didn't know how sad this orangutan looked until I got the picture home and looked at it on my p.c.

To take photos through a fence, can be tricky. A tip is to set your camera aperture settings to around f/2.8 (or as close as you can to it) and focus on the animal. This will blur out the fence better. Also a bit of luck is needed when taking photos and I was lucky enough to see this lion hugging a tree.

If all that fails and you can't still take a decent photo, it doesn't matter, you can still go out and enjoy the day by using your eyes and brain to remember things and just enjoy the moment.
