• Think big: Buy big bunches of tulips, hydrangeas or similar in a strong colour from a flower market and place them in simple glass vases.

• Take a different approach: Table centres are often expensive - think of alternating real flowers at every other table. Choose tall, thin vases that look stunning but still allow guests to see each other.

• Use in-season blooms: Out-of-season flowers incur big shipping costs.

• Get green fingered: Home-grown flowers and plants make great alternatives to traditional floral arrangements. Grow them ahead of time to make sure they look healthy and established for the wedding and pot them in attractive containers.

• Double up: Organise for someone to transfer the floral arrangements at the ceremony to the reception venue.

• Look to nature: Fill large vases with twigs and twisted willow and drape with fairy lights (borrow Christmas lights from friends and family).

• Shop for last season's styles: They're often marked down and no one will notice the difference.
