When you visit

Microsoft Azure hosts this website. Delivering pages involves processing technical information such as your IP address, browser details, requested pages and request times. Hosting services may retain technical logs for operation, troubleshooting and security. The site’s fonts load from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address and browser request information. Photographs are served from this website.

The site has no visitor analytics, advertising pixels, account registration, mailing-list forms or payment processing. Its own code does not set cookies or use browser storage to track you.

When you email me

If you get in touch, I receive your email address, any name you provide, your message and any attachments. Gmail handles these messages. I use them to reply, discuss your enquiry and, where relevant, arrange a collaboration or image licence. Providing this information is voluntary, but I need a way to reply if you want a response.

Why information is used

I rely on legitimate interests to answer ordinary enquiries and operate a reliable, secure website, including delivering its content and typography. Those interests are communicating with visitors and maintaining the site. Where you ask about entering a contract, I use the necessary details to take steps at your request or fulfil that contract. Information needed to meet a legal obligation is handled on that basis.

Watching videos and following links

When selected videos are displayed, their thumbnail images load from YouTube’s image service, sending technical request information to Google before a player is opened. An embedded player loads and requests playback when you press a video’s play or watch button. This is your choice to connect to YouTube; the player may process viewing and device information and use cookies or similar storage under Google’s policies.

You can leave the player unloaded and continue browsing. Closing the player stops it running here, but does not undo information already sent or remove storage a third party has set. Browser settings and Google’s privacy controls let you manage that storage. Following a YouTube or other external link takes you to a separate service with its own privacy practices.

Service providers and overseas processing

Microsoft provides hosting; Google provides Gmail, Google Fonts and YouTube. These providers may process information outside the UK. Their notices explain their processing locations, retention practices and international-transfer safeguards: Microsoft’s privacy statement and Google’s privacy policy. How long information is kept

Enquiry records are kept for as long as needed to answer and follow up the enquiry. Relevant correspondence may be retained longer for an ongoing collaboration, an agreed licence, a dispute or a legal record-keeping requirement. The decision depends on whether that purpose is still active and whether the information remains necessary. Unneeded correspondence should be deleted; this website does not automatically delete messages from Gmail. Provider logs and backup copies follow the relevant provider’s retention arrangements.

Your rights

Depending on the circumstances, you can request access to your information, correction, deletion, restriction of its use or a portable copy. These rights have conditions and exceptions.

Your right to object

You can object to use of your information based on legitimate interests. To raise an objection or make another privacy request, email garycowanphoto@gmail.com.

You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office: contact the ICO.
